Importance of CAD & CAM Software for CNC Plasma Cutting

In today’s modern era of metal fabrication, automation is the name of the game.  But, automation would not be possible without CAD drawing and CAM cutting software.  CAD stands for “Computer-Aided Design” and CAM stands for “Computer-Aided Manufacturing.”  CAD and CAM software is used to design and manufacture desired cuts with your CNC plasma cutting system.  While all metal fabrication shops are unique and have diverse cutting needs, CAD and CAM software is a critical component to a well-functioning automated cutting process.

CAD and CAM software can be used to design the most intricate, unique and artistic cuts, or simply to perform a set of simple cuts with rapidity.  Either way, the software tells the CNC controller how and where to cut and the machine that makes the cuts with precision and accuracy. Bringing creativity and ideas to life is no small feat and perfectly machining a part will involve several important steps with CAD and CAM software.  To begin, what needs to be cut – such as a part – must be designed in CAD software and saved.  Then, the saved design can be exported and opened in CAM software.  Once in CAM software, the predetermined parameters of the design, along with the type of cutter that will be used, will help the CAM software generate toolpaths.  Once the toolpath has been generated, it is then exported as G-code and the CNC controller received the instructions needed to complete the cut.  The CNC controller is receiving the perfect and precise instructions it needs to complete the most accurate and pristine cut possible. This will not only enhance productivity but reduce waste as well because fewer errors will occur.

There are many different kinds of CNC plasma CAD and CAM software and not all are created equal.  And, not every CNC plasma cutting system that you invest in will even come with CAD and CAM software.  At Tactical CNC, our CNC plasma cutting systems are complete systems that are turn-key – we include everything you need to begin cutting right away.  Our Tactical CNC CAD and CAM software is state-of-the-art, easy to use, and includes everything you need to make the best cuts possible.  Our CAD software allows for easy yet powerful drawing of any 2-D shape and our CAM software includes multiple part grid nesting.  Additionally, our software has pre-loaded cutting parameters, kerf-compensation, lead-ins and lead-outs, tool path generator (G code), easy image to vector conversion, and remote access for trouble-shooting.  We are so confident in our software that we invite you to take a virtual test drive of our software so that you can experience just how user friendly and intuitive it really is.  Arrange a time that is convenient for your schedule and we will invite you to a Join.Me online meeting where you will be able to share our screen and work with the software yourself to perform a virtual cut.
